Application of Sponge Iron in Permeable Reactive Barriers for Groundwater Remediation

A new type of sponge iron, namely Cleanit® SR media, is specifically engineered for permeable reactive barrier (PRB) applications for groundwater remediation. Sponge iron is manufactured from iron ore, with an iron content >98% (w/w). In terms of TCE removal, batch studies have shown that sponge iron has 10-20% faster removal rate than that of the regrinded iron. An additional column test was set up to simulate selenate removal in PRB applications. Sponge iron had approximately 97-98% of selenate removal efficiencies, with an influent selenium concentration of 2,200 µg/L and a retention time of 4.4 h. In summary, sponge iron media demonstrated significant benefits for chlorinated solvent and selenium removal in groundwater remediation.
